Chimney Maintenance

Chimney Cleaning

Your chimney plays a crucial role in venting smoke and gases from your fireplace or wood stove, but because it operates quietly in the background, problems often go unnoticed until they become serious. That’s why routine inspection and maintenance are key—not only to keep your system working properly but also to protect your home and family.

The Ontario Fire Code recommends having your chimney inspected at least once a year and cleaned as often as necessary. If you use your fireplace or stove weekly during the winter, yearly cleanings are essential. That’s why many of our customers schedule their inspection and cleaning with us every year.

We take pride in offering a clean, thorough service. Our rates are fair, our quotes are clear over the phone, and we never surprise you with hidden fees.

Chimney Inspection

A WETT inspection (Wood Energy Technology Transfer) is a certified assessment of wood-burning systems such as fireplaces, stoves, and chimney venting. It ensures that everything is installed properly and operating safely in compliance with building codes and fire safety standards. These inspections are often required by insurance companies when purchasing a home, installing a new unit, or renewing a policy.

There are three levels of WETT inspections:

  • Level 1 (Visual Inspection), most common, involves examining readily accessible parts
  • Level 2 (Technical Inspection), includes measurements and a closer look at clearances and components
  • Level 3 (Invasive Inspection), may require opening walls or ceilings to investigate serious concerns.

Draft Problems

Smoking problems or backdrafting occur when smoke from your fireplace or wood stove flows back into the home instead of venting properly through the chimney. This is not only unpleasant but also dangerous, as it exposes your household to harmful gases like carbon monoxide.

Common causes include:

  • a blocked or cold chimney
  • negative air pressure inside the home
  • improper flue sizing

Nest/Animal Blockage

Animals are drawn to chimneys as safe, sheltered spots to nest—especially if uncapped or damaged. Birds, squirrels, or raccoons can block the flue with nests, leading to poor ventilation, smoke backup, or chimney fires. A proper cap and regular maintenance keep your chimney safe and prevent unwanted guests.
